2010 Smart Growth Awards: Leaders Celebrating Local Action - June 18th Join Vision Long Island for the 2010 Smart Growth Awards on June 18th, from 11:30 to 2:00 at the Crest Hollow Country Club. There,
they will showcase the people, projects and policies that represent
Long Island's brightest hopes for the future. It's a prime opportunity
to connect with the cutting edge of land use, and the broad diversity
of local leaders making it happen.
No fewer than 10 Leadership Graduates have counted themselves among the staff or board of Long Island's premier "Smart Growth" organization. Vision, itself, credits the LH experience as a primary catalyst for its birth. Over the last decade, countless more grads have supported, worked with or found themselves promoted by Vision in some form or another.
Why? Because Leadership knows that one of the most critical civic responsibilities is care for the places we live, work and play. Vision Long Island embodies the spirit of Leadership Huntington -- Local people coming together to understand the issues, and to work together to build better communities.

Profiles in Leadership: Congratulations, Susan Hayes, Class of 1998!
Leadership Huntington congratulates fellow alumnus Susan Hayes for recently being honored by Long Island Business News as one of the "Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business." We, at Leadership have long been grateful for the value Susan has brought to all of her endeavors, and the support she has shown to Leadership and other organizations Island-wide. Way to go, Susan!
Susan Hayes has served Verizon -- a longtime supporter of Leadership Huntington -- for over 25 years, with experience encompassing Human Resources, Business Sales and Customer Service. As Director of Government and External Affairs, she was instrumental to the roll out of Verizon's FIOS TV service. Since August 2009 she has been responsible for Verizon's Strategic Acquisition Sales Channels for New York State, and previously for the Northeast. Her area's improvement has been so successful that in January 2010, private consultants were hired to identify best practices that could be shared with other areas.
Susan is active in several civic organizations, has served on the Board of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce for ten years and is a past Chairman of the Board for the Suffolk County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She's been married for 25 years and has two college-age sons.

President's Council Offers Leadership
On April 20th, Leadership Huntington's President's Council met at Mac's Steakhouse in Huntington Village to offer insights and suggestions as to how Leadership can more fully engage and serve the Huntington community. Many valuable ideas were proffered, some of which we hope to begin addressing through the Leading Edge newsletter.
However, President's Council members, many of whom are Leadership Grads themselves, are hardly satisfied to simply offer guidance. Chairman Ken Christensen announced a new initiative where Council members will offer expertise and help to organize small events focused on various issues and opportunities in Huntington.
Stay tuned...We look forward to sharing details of what's to come!

The Class of 2010 is Going Strong
Once again, Leadership Huntington is working with the "Best. Class. Ever." This latest greatest has seen the sights, learned history, explored tough issues, and developed new skills. As one classmate summarized it, they're "Everyday people, extraordinary citizens, Leadership Huntington."
Since their opening retreat at the historic Seminary for the Immaculate Conception with Craig Rider, the "pied piper of leadership" for many Fortune 500 companies, and the ever favorite tour of Huntington historic treasures led by Rex Metcalfe, the man who knows all the lore, the Class of 2010 has explored business, government and nonprofits, race, healthcare, drugs and gangs, energy, community environment and environmental sustainability. Last time it was sewage, next time it's the arts. As always, graduates, supporters and local notables have offered their time, expertise and tremendous value. Judging by the feedback, it's greatly appreciated.
The Class of 2010 is engaged and enthusiastic; present both to each other and the matter at hand. We appreciate what they're already doing, and look forward to great things to come. We think you'll like them, too!
Coming Soon...Announcement of the Class of 2010's debut at the annual Leadership Gala, anticipated to occur in October. It's going to be great!!!
